A Gorgeous Spring Garden in Westchester - The White Garden

 

The White Garden in Lewisboro, NY opened its gates for one day today...and oh, what a day it was!

Every April, Shelby White kicks off the Open Days garden-touring season by inviting all garden lovers to visit her phenomenal 45-acre woodland estate in the lower Hudson Valley.

 
I walked in and gasped - there are nearly 750,000 daffodils scattered among the rolling oak-hickory woods and mulched pathways. The view was breathtaking.


And then I noticed that the fellow handing out maps of the extensive grounds was none other than Patrick Chassé, eminent landscape designer! That was when I realized that this garden was going to be even more than a magnificent daffodil display.


Patrick was as gracious as ever and told me not to miss the formal grounds around the house, the moss garden, and to check out the grotto. He also said that this is the best year for daffodils that we have had in about 8 years. And the timing was perfect - the daffs were in full bloom as were the weeping cherries and flowering pears!



 Eric Schmidt, the head gardener at the White Garden, and the person who digs in thousands of new daffodil bulbs every fall, is to be mightily commended. What an awesome job he does.





 

The White Garden features a Greek Revival-style house and the immediate grounds are classically inspired. A Temple of Apollo overlooks the reflecting pond and a circle garden contains busts of various people from antiquity.


 Several water features accent the landscape and a cascade and grotto are stunning. 




There is truly so much to see. Like the window into the pool as shown here.




and the fabulous antique stone sculptures. Look at that smiling face.


They will have one more open day on the weekend after Labor Day. So make sure to mark your calendar now! Go to the Garden Conservancy Open Days website for details..


Then you can see all the late summer perennials that will be on display. I can't wait. Above is the Conservatory.

    Spring is the best season to improve your garden by planting colorful flowers and plants and also make a good landscaping design that will improve your outdoor area.

'Purple Smoke' - The best Baptisia

Try  planting  Baptisia 'Purple Smoke'.  And pair it with Baptisia Cherries Jubilee. A deer resistant, native, drought tolerant, purple, long lived perennial! Wow! The Magnificent Purslane - Edible Landscaping at its best!

What was one of Mahatma Gandhi's favorite foods?  and what did Henry Thoreau eat while residing at Walden Pond?  PURSLANE . Purslane, long considered an obnoxious weed in the U.S., is, in fact, full of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids!  And now this overlooked gem - considered 'one of the most nutritious greens in the world' -  is receiving the attention it is due. Usha Palaniswamy of the Department of Plant Science, University of Connecticut, reports that, "Purslane is receiving much attention for cultivation by the United States Department of Agriculture as part of their effort to bring about a modification in the western diet with increased intake of fresh fruits and vegetables." Purslane contains a high concentration of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the highly sought-after Omega-3 fatty acids. My one day Class Wednesday April 16 in NY - Jan Johnsen

I am teaching a one day class on Wednesday April 16 at the NY Botanical Garden  It is a fun, eye opening and fun class!            (class size is limited.) I  share my insights into landscape design and how to use various cultural and ancient traditions in a garden. I discuss how to use the compelling duality of Yin and Yang in a setting, explain how each of the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) affects us differently, which proportions create a more harmonious setting.  I also show how to place rocks in the landscape according to the Japanese understanding. Everyone loves this. and of course, I discuss Color and its effects on our wellbeing... I show 2 beautiful powerpoint to illustrate my talk..  Handouts reinforce the information I provide.
