Peter Zumthor and Piet Oudolf - Serpentine Pavilion 2011



The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011 by famed Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.

The 2011 Pavilion is the 11th commission by the Serpentine Gallery. Every year a well known architect is asked to design this seasonal pavilion. Zumthor's structure is his first building in the UK. It includes a specially created garden by the influential Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf.

The concept for Zumthor's Pavilion is the hortus conclusus, a Latin term for 'enclosed garden'. It is a contemplative room, a garden within a structure.

One enters the building and begins the transition into the central garden, a place buffered from worldly noise and traffic. It is an interior space designed for sitting, walking and enjoying the garden.

I find Zumthor's statements in this Video instructive. He says as he gets older he is more tuned into the the garden. Sometimes it takes architects years before they realize the building and the surroundings are one and the same.

    Oudolf's planting plans always fascinate me - thank you for finding and sharing this one! This garden is very interesting, on my very long list of those I would like to visit in person some day.       I so appreciate that you chose to tell my how you like Oudolf. This structure to me is more about Oudolf than about the architect.

    I also adore Oudolf and his feeling for plants. The handdrawn plant-plan is interesting to see. In addition to that I´m happy about the comparison of the plan and the real planting. They create such a strong atmosphere.Nice

    I agree- the architect was very gracious when speaking about gardens. Kudos to Zumthor! and wasn't the planting plan by Oudolf interesting? Makes me wonder why I bothered to learn autocad. :-)

Try  planting  Baptisia 'Purple Smoke'.  And pair it with Baptisia Cherries Jubilee. A deer resistant, native, drought tolerant, purple, long lived perennial! Wow! The Magnificent Purslane - Edible Landscaping at its best!

What was one of Mahatma Gandhi's favorite foods?  and what did Henry Thoreau eat while residing at Walden Pond?  PURSLANE . Purslane, long considered an obnoxious weed in the U.S., is, in fact, full of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids!  And now this overlooked gem - considered 'one of the most nutritious greens in the world' -  is receiving the attention it is due. Usha Palaniswamy of the Department of Plant Science, University of Connecticut, reports that, "Purslane is receiving much attention for cultivation by the United States Department of Agriculture as part of their effort to bring about a modification in the western diet with increased intake of fresh fruits and vegetables." Purslane contains a high concentration of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the highly sought-after Omega-3 fatty acids. My one day Class Wednesday April 16 in NY - Jan Johnsen

I am teaching a one day class on Wednesday April 16 at the NY Botanical Garden  It is a fun, eye opening and fun class!            (class size is limited.) I  share my insights into landscape design and how to use various cultural and ancient traditions in a garden. I discuss how to use the compelling duality of Yin and Yang in a setting, explain how each of the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) affects us differently, which proportions create a more harmonious setting.  I also show how to place rocks in the landscape according to the Japanese understanding. Everyone loves this. and of course, I discuss Color and its effects on our wellbeing... I show 2 beautiful powerpoint to illustrate my talk..  Handouts reinforce the information I provide.
