Bubbling Urns - A Summertime Joy
water feature by Johnsen Landscapes & Pools
Its 100 degrees outside right now. Sweltering. The air hangs like heavy drapes upon the landscape. There is no breeze. The garden quietly endures. So what can you do to lighten the oppressive atmosphere?
ADD A BUBBLING URN - a recirculating water feature

Why do this? Because the sound of water and its dynamic presence ( ask the great Dr. Emoto) add life and energy to a stultifying summer garden... Hear what I mean in this very very short video:
Bubbling urns and fountains bring sparkle to your garden. You can build a recirculating water fountain cheaply by buying parts in a hardware store or more expensively by going to a pond supplies vendor....I am not good at hardware so I buy kits.

Bubbling Urns are set atop an underground reservoir that keeps re-circulating the water. Once the urn fills with water, the water spills over into the underground basin, which pumps the water back up through the urn.

There are many how-to do-it videos on You Tube...The one I like the best comes from the pond supplier Aquascape
Aquascape provides a wide variety of decorative pieces that can be used as a water feature from ceramic urns to brass sculptures to carved stone structures.
alan titchmarsh fountain from UK Waterfeatures.com
My current favorite bubbling urn is the Alan Titchmarsh Kingsdale fountain from UK Waterfeatures.com...I want this one! It lights up....you place the black reservoir into the earth so you only see the glass cone:
The possibilities are endless once you master the tubing and the underwater pump...and if you don't have a GFI electric plug nearby - buy a very long premium outdoor extension cord....
I loved your post - we want a simple water feature for our native plant garden though the plants will be drought tolerant so we don't want the water to splash them - it's really just to provide a water source for the wildlife. I loved your first picture. I had been thinking about something resembling a stream bed (i.e making it ourselves) but now I'm not sure...
ReplyDeletethanks! - the first photo is the one that I created for a dear client....same mechanics as all the rest..
